Doing Right for God Acts 4:19-20
“But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to give heed to you rather than to God, you be the judge; for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.” (NASB95)”
Years ago, I had an interview for a tech support job. After five rounds of interviews, I was on the sixth and final with the Vice President of the support team. I was told going into it that this would be more of a formality, but to still take it seriously. The interview, for the most part, was a standard exchange of questions and answers. Toward the end of the interview, my interviewer asked me a question that he said he asked everyone. He asked me, “If you could work any job in the world, what would it be?” It was at this point he leaned back in his chair and smiled waiting to see how I answered. This was before I became a pastor as I was still in seminary at the time. I paused for a moment to think, then responded, “I would be a pastor.” His smile faded on his face, and he leaned forward asking me to clarify what I had said. I repeated my answer, and he inquired why I said I wanted to be a pastor. In the next minute, I presented the Gospel to him as I told him my desire is to serve Christ. He said he had never heard that answer before as people usually said C.E.O. or software engineer. The interview ended after a few more questions and I was offered and accepted a position with that company.
I really love telling that story because sharing Jesus during a job interview is not expected. When we are led by the Holy Spirit to do something, we should not question Him and instead do what He is leading us. In chapter four of Acts, Peter and John were told by the Jewish Council to not speak or teach in the name of Christ. Peter and John both answered that they will rather obey God than man. That then means doing what is right in the eyes of God and wrong in the eyes of man. Man may not see it right to share Jesus during unusual areas of life, such as job interviews, but Jesus tells us to listen to Him and His commands. Whenever an opportunity occurs to share Jesus, we should seize that opportunity. It may only be for a few seconds in a conversation, but the seed is planted or is watered. We have been saved by the Creator of the universe. We cannot help but share this hope that we have through our faith in Jesus Christ and His love for us.
